V.A. - Asian Garden Vol. 2 (2*CD Compilation)
If you look at the world music shelves in your music store for modern Asian music, you will find out pretty fast that there is not too much to see.
It seems that besides a few pop-classics from Turkey and several Bollywood-compilations, only traditional folk music albums from Vietnam, Japan and Mongolian throat singing are in demand. On the other hand, for example, in Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, China, Indonesia, India and Iran regional produced pop music albums sell several millions every year, but almost nothing of it arrives in Europe. It is very difficult for the Asian music industry in Europe. Until now, with certain exceptions, only a few people are interested in the music that is produced beyond Bosporus. The reason for this might be that the melody arcs are not directly understandable; the sound samples feel unfamiliar; the sounds are mostly too orthodox and also many recordings do not fit technically into our listening-habits.
The double compilation "Asian Garden, Vol. 2" shows what we've been missing till now. On request of the world music-label "Lola's World", the famous radio presenter with Turkish roots, Gülbahar Kültür (Funkhaus Europa / WDR Köln) allows us once again to view an insight into her gigantic CD-archive. As music lovers you could almost become jealous, but it seems that if you compile world famous compilations you get records even from the most exotic labels. Anyway, lets take a look at what Gülbahar Kültür compiled this time.
The a-side "Saffron Beats" lets us feel the peaceful relaxing atmosphere of the Asian continent. 19 lounge tracks existing in this part, glide without ever becoming dull. Japanese Shigeru Umebayashi is among the ones that attract the attention. Cover version of Santana's "Black Magic Woman" by Albert Kuvezin & Yat-Kha from Siberian Tuva, will leave a smile on the faces of the people. The British-Indian duo The Unseen Guest opens quietly and unobstrusively a brandnew music-pigeonhole for themselves. Of course there are also familiar names; a good world music-sampler can not come out without the stars of the scene like State of Bengal, Bollywood Brass Band, Malik Adouane, Tarika, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Hisham Abbas.
The b-side "Club Chili Gong" has a way different basic approach; it aims on the dancing feet - to be honest, it forces you to dance. The artists from Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, India or Singapore fuse the ethnical music of their home-countries with the current dance grooves. Murat Ses (Turkey), Pedram (Iran), Ondar (Tuva), Urker (Kazakhstan) and Sammi Cheng (Hong Kong) leave a special impression. The use of established pop & rock patterns makes it easier for western ears – which are not used to these kind of tones – to deal with the unusual voices and instruments from the Asian culture-cosmos.
The second CD of the "Asian Garden, Vol. 2" compilation, which is especially very entertaining, will cause an euphoric atmosphere on the dance floor of every world music-party.
